Summary 

Good research data management is considered crucial for ensuring the integrity, replicability and sustainability of research findings, and a data management plan is the first step towards achieving this. It is a document that enables you to implement a planned approach, but also mitigate problems as much as possible. It is supposed to be ever-changing, thus documenting over time your responses to barriers that cannot be anticipated. 

Colleagues in Library Research Services are supporting researchers with this throughout the research data lifecycle, from the planning stage, through the working stage, all the way to the sharing stage. 

Learning Objectives 

By the end of the workshop participants will be able to: 

• Recognise the importance of planning their approach to research data throughout the research data lifecycle. 
• Evaluate their options for data documentation, storage and sharing, while considering ethical and legal implications. 
• Create an account in DMPonline. 
• Use an appropriate data management plan template, based on discipline or funder requirements.  
• Develop an initial data management plan. 
• Identify available support and future training opportunities for themselves, or direct others to them. 

Programme 

The workshop programme is as follows: 

• Discussion covering what we mean when we speak about “data”. 
• Overview of recent developments in the research environment. 
• Live demonstration of DMPonline, a web-based tool designed to help you write, or update, your data management plan. 
• Considerations for the individual sections of a data management plan (DMP). Examples will be provided. 
• Questions. 
• Practice with DMPonline. Participants will create an account, identify useful templates and start putting together their DMPs.
